American Cockroach:
The American cockroach, the largest house-infesting species, measures about one and one-half inches in length. It is characterized by reddish-brown wings with light markings on the thorax. This species is known for its aggressive behavior and tends to prefer warm, damp areas. It is more likely to be observed in daytime and outdoors compared to other species.
As scavengers, American cockroaches are willing to consume almost anything, and they are commonly found in food preparation areas. These cockroaches have a lifespan of up to 15 months.
Brown-Banded Cockroach:
The brown-banded cockroach, measuring about five-eighths of an inch in length, is characterized by wings adorned with two brownish-yellow bands. This species is primarily nocturnal and has the ability to fly. While it may be found throughout any structure, brown-banded cockroaches show a preference for dry, warm areas, high locations, and the interiors of furniture.
As scavengers, these cockroaches exhibit a versatile diet and consume almost anything. The adult members of this species have a lifespan of up to 10 months.
German Cockroach:
The German cockroach, measuring about five-eighths of an inch in length and displaying a light to medium brown coloration, is primarily nocturnal. This species tends to infest areas in close proximity to food, moisture, and warmth, making it a frequent inhabitant of apartments, homes, supermarkets, and restaurants.
As scavengers, German cockroaches have a broad diet, consuming almost anything. Adult individuals of this species can live for up to one year. Notably, extremely heavy infestations are not uncommon, contributing to the German cockroach's reputation for having the widest distribution among all cockroaches in the United States.
Oriental Cockroach:
The Oriental cockroach, dark brown and approximately one inch in length, is commonly found outdoors but often enters buildings through sewer pipes. This species tends to inhabit areas near the ground and thrives in warm, damp environments.
Oriental cockroaches are opportunistic feeders, consuming anything available, with a particular affinity for garbage, sewage, and decaying organic matter. When starches are present, they seem to show a preference for this type of food.
Adult Oriental cockroaches can have a lifespan of up to 180 days. Notably, they exhibit a more sluggish behavior compared to other cockroach species and emit a distinctive, unpleasant odor.
Smokybrown Cockroach:
The smokybrown cockroach, characterized by its dark brown color and reaching up to one and one-half inches in length, prefers to reside outdoors. Compared to other species, populations of smokybrown cockroaches are relatively immobile. As scavengers, they exhibit a broad diet, consuming almost anything, with a preference for plant material.
Adult smokybrown cockroaches can have a lifespan of up to 200 days. This species is particularly abundant in the southeastern United States and is known for its behavior of flying towards lights at night.
